Welcome to the Riverside Police Explorer Competition (R.P.E.C), California’s largest explorer competition!
Over the course of two days, your police explorers will compete in eight live scenarios, handgun fire and a multi-event physical fitness competition.
Please note that this year, we will be limiting each agency to a single team, to allow more agencies to participate this year!

Dates & Location
The Riverside Police Explorer Competition, also known as R.P.E.C., will be held at the following dates and locations:

Important Information & Awards Criteria
Agencies will be limited to 1 Team, to compete in the Scenarios, Live Fire, Team Obstacle Course and Tug-of-War Events.
9mm Handgun Shooting
Explorers will use a supplied Glock 17, Gen 5 (Iron Sights) to complete the live fire event. The event will consist of a team of 4 Explorers.- Best combined team scores will advance for the Team Shooting Competition award.
- The individual shooter with best target score from the team shooting event will advance for the Overall Top Shot award.
- In the event of a tied score, a tie breaker event will be conducted.
Individual Explorer & Advisor Obstacle Course
– A maximum of 3 Explorers can compete per agency.
– A maximum of 2 Advisors can compete per agency.Team Obstacle Course
A team consisting of 4 Explorers (the team can consist of an all male, all female or a co-ed team), will compete in an obstacle course.
Award Criteria
To be considered for the Overall Team award, the agency must participate in all Day 1 scenarios, the live fire event and the team obstacle course. Teams who do not wish to compete in any of these three events will only be considered for 1st through 5th place in each individual scenario category and will not be considered for the overall award.
Day 1 – Events and Requirements
Active Shooter
Minimum of 4 Explorers with a maximum of 8.
Officer Down
Minimum of 4 Explorers with a maximum of 6.
Crisis Intervention
Minimum of 4 Explorers with a maximum of 6.
Building Search
Minimum of 4 Explorers with a maximum of 6.
Unknown Risk Traffic Stop
Minimum of 2 Explorers with a maximum of 4.
Domestic Violence
Minimum of 2 Explorers with a maximum of 4.
Exigent Response
Minimum of 4 Explorers with a maximum of 6.
DUI
Minimum of 3 with a maximum of 4 Explorers. 2 Explorers will complete the DUI investigation, the additional 1-2 Explorers will complete the written questions related to a DUI investigation.
Day 2 – Events and Requirements
9mm Handgun Shooting
A team of 4 Explorers will:
- Fire 10 rounds (slow fire) at a stationary target.
- Best combined team scores will advance.
- Best individual shooter score, will advance for the Overall Top Shot award.

1-Mile Run
1 Male and 1 Female Explorer from each agency will be invited to complete four laps around the track.
Obstacle Course
Individual Explorer & Advisor Obstacle Course
– Male and Female categories
Team Obstacle Course – A team consisting of 4 Explorers, will compete in the obstacle course. Only 1 Team per agency.

Tug of War
A Team of 5 Explorers will compete in a tug-of-war. No cleats or Gloves permitted.
